Johnston & Murphy steps into women’s market for fall 2008

Johnston & Murphy, the premium men’s footwear and accessories brand that started in Newark in 1850, began the soft launch of a women’s collection in select Johnson & Murphy retail locations last weekend, including its Bridgewater and Marlton stores in New Jersey. “Over the past several years, Johnston & Murphy has been building momentum with successful expansions into new categories for our men’s business,” said Jonathan D. Caplan, president of Johnston & Murphy. “We feel the time is right to utilize that momentum for our women’s venture. We know how to make beautiful, quality products, and we are excited to be extending that expertise to a new consumer group.”

The first women’s collection for fall 2008 consists of roughly 70 percent footwear, 20 percent handbags and 10 percent premium accessories, including scarves, gloves and outerwear. Retail prices for footwear range from $150 to $250 for dress and dress casual shoes and $400 for boots. Handbag prices range from $200 to $450.

The fall collection is being featured in 28 pre-existing Johnston & Murphy stores, all of which have the brand’s new store design and a larger square footage. In addition to the Johnston & Murphy web site now being for both genders, a women’s catalog will be introduced in mid-September.
