Teen fashion trends for school

August 22, 2008 at 1:26 am (Fashion) (, )

When school starts, it always means a time for renewal in teen fashion (read: a time to find a great new look!). The first day of school has passed, and hopefully, the first appearance you made after the summer break was a good one, because first impressions do matter. But never fear, there’s always room for improvement!

Keep things simple and classic, nothing in-your-face or over the top. It’s okay to be a little trendy, but you have to adapt the trends to your personal style, or you’ll end up looking like a major trend-chaser. Put on the confidence! If you don’t have it, fake it. When you aren’t doubting yourself, no one else will doubt you or your clothing choices.

Create the Outfit

If you wore a great killer ensemble for your grand entrance the first day of school, just make sure you back up your outfit and keep your dressing pattern consistent. That is, don’t wear an ultra trendy, right-off-the-runway look and then turn around and wear simple jeans & a tee combo the rest of the year.

Look good, but nothing too dressy or attention-grabbing (only exception is if that’s the look you’re going for the whole school year!).

Here are several teen fashion looks to consider:

Chic & understated: Black tee with dark denim hipsters, black boots, low-slung black belt, plus an oversized eye-catching necklace in turquoise, silver, or coral. Tres chic! Read the rest of this entry »

Retro runway — Many of today’s fierce teen fashions are inspired by the past

August 20, 2008 at 9:26 am (Fashion) ()

Alyssa Parish of Francesville describes her style as retro — inspired primarily by trends from the ’80s.

Tiffany Saunders models an outfit from the 1980s with clothes from Amused Vintage Clothing in West Lafayette.

“I am into skinny jeans and vests and I just got a new pair of boat shoes,” the 14-year-old said.

Alyssa and other students shopping for back-to-school clothes may be surprised by the clothes their parents wore at their age. Some of the trends from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are in stores and influencing today’s fashion for back-to-school.

“Today’s fashions are definitely being influenced from the past,” wrote Marla Shavin, Macy’s spokeswoman, in an e-mail. “The whole boho chic/hippie look is coming back (and) that is a throwback from the ’80s.”

Alyssa knows the power of vintage and even borrows some of the long necklaces, bangles and bracelets from her mom, who used to wear them back in the ’80s.

But what’s funny about the retro look is that no matter how hard teens may try to distance themselves from their parents, there is a fashion lesson to be learned by peering into closets from way back when.

When Alyssa’s mother, Stephanie Parish, was 14, she was wearing popped collars, skinny pants, high-waisted pants and military trend jackets with buttons.

Similar to today’s fashion, what you wore said something about you.

Some teens from past decades stayed in the center of the fashion spectrum, sporting the popular “prep” look, while others ventured out and did their own thing.

Parents and grandparents can easily reminisce about how fashion could speak volumes about a kid going back to school, even before they opened their mouths.

“When a guy wore a leather jacket, Elvis inspired bright-colored dress shirt or tight jeans, they were considered a hood,” said Alyssa’s grandmother, Diane Lumley, who was Alyssa’s age back in 1967.

Many of these styles are coming back into fashion — even the styles Lumley wore.

Can a Girl Really Wear Too Much Black?

April 30, 2008 at 12:57 pm (News) (, )

Honestly, Tina Fey can do no wrong. She’s brilliant, funny and women everywhere love her because we can relate. However. Maybe, just maybe, Tina might want to think about wearing something besides black.

Although she’s wearing a lovely dress (and I love the gold shoes with it) Tina always wears black on the red carpet. With her coloring she would look amazing in so many colors, especially red. I can’t say I’m much better, though, because I wear loads of black. But once in a while a girl needs to add color to her wardrobe.
