Fashion! JLo parties

The description “diamond in the rough” isn’t one that instantly conjures up an image of Jennifer Lopez; on the contrary, the sultry performer is more likely to evoke a vision of finely spun silk. In the hundreds of photographs we’ve seen of JLo strutting on the red carpet, onscreen or onstage, the word “rough” doesn’t exactly typify. Yet that was the exact phrase used by Catherine Walsh, senior vice-president of American fragrances at Coty Prestige, to describe how Lopez looked one night when they met to discuss her new fragrance, Deseo (from $46, at department stores). Upon hearing herself thus described, Lopez is said to have envisioned the flacon for the scent. Set to hit store shelves in March, Lopez’s eighth fragrance is her most sophisticated so far.

Has Fashion Created a Middle-Aged Monster?

March 16, 2008 at 8:58 am (News) ()

Maybe it’s all my fault. After all, I’ve always tried to help women realize there is fashion life after 40. That moms can have style. Emphasized that women deserve to look their best. And then along comes a show that makes it all seem so…sad.
The Real Housewives of New York City on Bravo crystallizes the right clothes/plastic surgery/fake tan equals youth mindset. While all of the women look good for their age, no one is going to mistake them for 20-somethings.
The “sexy mom” (her words, not mine) poster girl is Ramona Singer (pictured, second from right). From watching Ramona rifle through her miniskirt-filled closet to listening to her brag about her MILF status (eww), I felt as mortified for her as her pre-teen daughter did. Maybe one of the other social climbers will shove Ramona into a pair of mom jeans and white sneakers to calm her down.
The question is not whether or not The Real Housewives of New York City is watchable TV; I’ll probably watch it again (but than again I got hooked on Gone Country on CMT, so take my reality TV critique for what it’s worth.)
The question is whether the fashion industry has gone overboard in urging women of all ages to wear just about everything including skimpy halter tops, miniskirts, tight jeans.
