Summer 2009 must-have: Metal Embellishment

June 14, 2009 at 8:38 am (Fashion) ()

Summer 2009 is all about sparkling and making some noise. Metal embellishment is a wonderful way to combine the two. Metal decoration is really huge this season so be ready to see a lot of metal embellished items on store shelves.

From metal beads to metal handles, from tiny peaces to heavy decoration, metal is almost everywhere in summer 2009! Wanna be hot? Go metal!

This is an amazing shoulder bag! It’s made of synthetic leather and decorated with metal mesh. Studden accents, antique brass tone hardware, O-ring details make it look really sexy, feminine and sparkling. Simply can’t take my eyes off of it.

how to find the perfect white shirt

November 20, 2008 at 11:13 am (Fashion) (, , )

It’s odd that the perfect white shirt should be so hard to find. Walk into any high street chain and there are lots of them – it’s just that to the picky eye there’s something just a little bit wrong with most of them.

gap-designer-white-shirt

Doing something simple well isn’t easy. Everything needs to come together: it needs fine cotton neither too thin nor too thick, a brilliant cut, great stitching, good buttons, perfect cuffs and sleeve length; and on top of all that, the best require a bit of flair. Which is why, if you were to do the white shirt equivalent of a blind wine tasting – that is, line up a big range with the labels ripped out – you’d nearly always find that the ones you really, really lusted after were made by the masters: Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, Jil Sander in the old days, Martin Margiela, Viktor & Rolf (I still lust after one of theirs that I failed to buy a few seasons ago – simple but with an asymmetrical cross-over front and a gorgeous collar). You don’t need telling that none of these come cheap.

Whenever I think of the perfect white shirt, I always think of that lanky aristocratic French model, Inès de la Fressange, the one-time muse of Karl Lagerfeld, who had a way with white shirts – although, if you had a face and a figure like hers, it would be hard not to. She wore them strict and straight; on her they looked classier than any couture number. If you want to see how it’s done, check her out on YouTube, where she’s wearing one that, atypically, has a few frills, teamed with jeans and heels. That’s how it’s done if you’re a jeans-and-heels kind of girl. She also used to tuck them into pencil skirts – very Miss Moneypenny – and was immediately transformed into the kind of secretary whom every man dreamt of having.

If you’re going to do that, you need to find one that is cut slim so that it doesn’t bulk out the skirt, and pull it together with a gorgeous big belt. Here the high street chains have come into their own. They may not have the perfection of detail that the starrier masters go in for, but they’re a whole lot friendlier on the purse and there are plenty of neatly cut versions around.

Thakoon at New york Fashion week Spring 2009

September 14, 2008 at 5:32 am (Fashion) (, )

The looks on the Thakoon runway had a playful — but sophisticated — naughtiness to them; prints like lipstick kisses and false eyelashes and chiffon gowns with pleated bodices.

Skin colors such as nude, buff and beige were punctuated with textured black, deep red and bougainvillea. The lipstick kisses were subtle, like a sheer nude kisses trench coat with a tulle fringe. And rose prints were featured on several of the dresses, such as a rose print seamed dress with dark ribbon trim.

Designer Thakoon Panichgul designed the printed dress that Michelle Obama wore the night her husband accepted the nomination at the Democratic National Convention.

“Seeing it was magical,” he said.

* It’s normal to be a trendy. You have to adapt the trends to your personal fashion style, or you’ll end up looking like a major trend-chaser.

The new socialites

July 29, 2008 at 1:22 am (Fashion) (, , , , , )

Forget Paris and Lindsay, there’s a new breed of socialites taking the party scene by storm. Here’s a guide to who’s who.

Peaches Geldof

The 19-year-old daughter of Brit rocker Bob Geldof and his then-wife, the late TV presenter Paula Yates, has made more than a few headlines for her rebellious antics. Her day job? In 2005, Peaches wrote and presented her own television program, Peaches Geldof: Teenage Mind, which spawned other TV appearances. She’s also penned several articles for British newspapers, and is the face of Aussie fashion label Dotti. Currently dating: Faris Badwan, lead singer of Brit garage rock band The Horrors.

Lauren Conrad

Star of reality TV show The Hills, “LC” lives in the Hollywood Hills, and spends her time partying at hot clubs, shopping with friends and working out at the gym with MTV cameras following her every move. The 22-year-old famously fell out with her one-time BFF and co-star Heidi Montag, who dates the show’s villain, Spencer Pratt.

Princess Beatrice of York

Who said royals couldn’t be IT girls? When the 19-year-old isn’t undertaking work experience as a “stylist” at UK department store Selfridges, Bea attends lavish parties with her mum (the other Fergie), and goes clubbing with friends including Kelly Osbourne and Elvis’ granddaughter Riley Keough.

Agyness Deyn

After being “spotted” at a UK shopping centre as a teen, 25-year-old Agyness (real name Laura Hollins) has become one of the world’s most famous models. Also a singer, Aggy often DJs at nightclubs, and thanks to her quirky style, regularly makes “best dressed” lists. Currently dating: Albert Hammond Jr of rock band The Strokes.

Lydia Hearst

Despite being the heiress of her great-grandfather’s publishing fortune, 23-year-old Lydia has also carved out a career as a model, played a guest role on Gossip Girl, and is a columnist for the New York Post.

Lily Allen

Though best known for her hit single ‘Smile’, Lily, 23, has been doing more partying than singing lately. The daughter of actor/musician Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen was recently kicked off a yacht during the Cannes Film Festival after ripping of her bikini top and jumping into the ocean.

From a Shirt to a Skirt: The Extremes of Androgynous Fashion

July 28, 2008 at 12:18 am (Fashion) (, )

It’s one thing to take on androgynous styles like flinging on your boyfriend’s slightly oversized shirt and transforming it into a svelte shirt-dress or casually throwing on a checkered shirt atop a dress and calling it a carefree chic day. But when you take a masculine dress shirt and deconstruct it down to a distinctly feminine piece of clothing in the form of a skirt, then you’ve deftly pushed the envelope on androgyny.

Fashionably speaking, what we have here is ingenious. On first glance, I was unsure what was before me: a tattered skirt perhaps or maybe a traditional garment of Swedish culture like the kilt is to the Scottish. Curiosity got the best of me as I continued to pore over the picture a few more times and an “aha!” moment finally surfaced.

In a gutsy attempt to move away from the tedium of fashion conservatism, it came to me that this young lady from Stockholm, Sweden had decided to alter her father’s shirt into a skirt! With several folds and tucks, she was able to render a men’s dress shirt into a very complicated silhouette that serves as a skirt.

However, as I revisited the look a couple more times (I was kind of dazed and confused by it all), the complexity of the skirt became a gift and a curse. On one hand, the oddity of the skirt was a definite lure, but at the same time it seemed all too fastidious with the make-shift skirt’s undulating folds and creases.

All the same, applause is owed to the young Swede. The mere idea can only be fathomed by a few like minds—Marc Jacobs and his inverted heel pumps—that tick to the rhythm of a different drum. That being said, curiosity did kill the cat so I’m not expecting hoards of you to all of a sudden start rummaging through your boyfriends’ closet (men, breathe easy) to scrunch up his shirts into skirts, but consider this hodgepodge skirt as a rather convoluted addition to current androgynous styles women have at their disposal. Mind you, it’s not for the fainthearted!

Paris Fashion Week: Haute Couture

July 8, 2008 at 11:55 pm (Fashion) (, , )

Jean Paul Gaultier 2008

Jean-Paul Gaultier’s ornate bodice “cages” and skirts were literally sculpted from thick sausages of silk satin, looped and twirled like cornelli lace.

Not impressed at all. It kinds of gets too old and ugly: does anyone want to look like a cake these days? Moreover, PETA hates you for using too much fur.

Jean Paul Gaultier 2008

Jean Paul Gaultier 2008

One of the few things I liked was the new idea for fringe. The bright underline is very playful. It looks like it was sprayed right on the forehead.

Overall, call me a bitch, but I find Gaultier’s collection this year extremely ugly and I would never wear it for this ammount of money, well, even if I was payed by the house to wear it. Don’t want to look like the Cruella de Vil. Really.
