August 30, 2008 at 11:25 am (Fashion) ()

Johnston & Murphy, the premium men’s footwear and accessories brand that started in Newark in 1850, began the soft launch of a women’s collection in select Johnson & Murphy retail locations last weekend, including its Bridgewater and Marlton stores in New Jersey. It will also be available online at www.johnstonmurphy.com

“Over the past several years, Johnston & Murphy has been building momentum with successful expansions into new categories for our men’s business,” said Jonathan D. Caplan, president of Johnston & Murphy. “We feel the time is right to utilize that momentum for our women’s venture. We know how to make beautiful, quality products, and we are excited to be extending that expertise to a new consumer group.”

The first women’s collection for fall 2008 consists of roughly 70 percent footwear, 20 percent handbags and 10 percent premium accessories, including scarves, gloves and outerwear. Retail prices for footwear range from $150 to $250 for dress and dress casual shoes and $400 for boots. Handbag prices range from $200 to $450.

The fall collection is being featured in 28 pre-existing Johnston & Murphy stores, all of which have the brand’s new store design and a larger square footage. In addition to the Johnston & Murphy web site now being for both genders, a women’s catalog will be introduced in mid-September.

Revealed: Jessica Alba’s Secret for Losing the Baby Weight!

August 27, 2008 at 9:32 am (News) ()

Just two months after giving birth to daughter Honor Marie, Jessica Alba is 25 lbs. lighter – and her trainer is telling PEOPLE just how she did it.

“Jessica went from a size 8 to a size 4 pretty quickly,” says Alba’s longtime trainer Ramona Braganza. The actress – who flaunted her post-baby body at the ALMA Awards on Aug. 17 – has been opting for a low-fat, low-carb diet as part of Braganza’s 321 Baby Bulge Be Gone plan.

She has been sweating, too: With an elliptical machine and treadmill at home, Alba, 27, has resumed her routine of core exercises, cardio and circuit training.

“The baby always comes first, but Jessica definitely set goals for herself,” says Braganza, who now trains Alba six days a week.

And having a workout buddy helped. “She loves working out with a girlfriend,” says Braganza, whose client, actress Jamie King, frequently trains with Alba.

Says Braganza: “Jessica has made amazing progress in a very short time.”

Kanye West: From Rapping to Runway

August 25, 2008 at 9:30 am (Fashion)

Kanye Omari West, but he is also sometimes called the Louis Vuitton Don!

Kanye and Fashion:

Kanye loves fashion. Recently his fabulous eye-wear has been Burberry (like at the Grammy’s and Paris Fashion Week)and in the past he performed at the opening of Takashi Murakami’s “Murakami” exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum where Louis Vuitton prints and bags reigned supreme. Plus, he always looks dapper in clothes that actually fit — not that loose, baggy style you associate with the rap world (except P Diddy who always looks delish).

Kanye and Louis Vuitton:

Apparently the rapping and producing sensation (who spent the past week sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week for the men’s shows) is pairing with the French luxury brand to collaborate on a line of men’s shoes. And after he finishes that, he plans on designing his own women’s line under his own name that he hopes to launch this autumn. A producer, a multiple Grammy winner and a designer…when does he find the time? A little jealous of the gorgeous shoes that men are sure to get from Kanye and Louis Vuitton! Guess we’ll have to wait for the women’s line. But it’ll be worth it.

Teen fashion trends for school

August 22, 2008 at 1:26 am (Fashion) (, )

When school starts, it always means a time for renewal in teen fashion (read: a time to find a great new look!). The first day of school has passed, and hopefully, the first appearance you made after the summer break was a good one, because first impressions do matter. But never fear, there’s always room for improvement!

teens

Keep things simple and classic, nothing in-your-face or over the top. It’s okay to be a little trendy, but you have to adapt the trends to your personal style, or you’ll end up looking like a major trend-chaser. Put on the confidence! If you don’t have it, fake it. When you aren’t doubting yourself, no one else will doubt you or your clothing choices.

Create the Outfit

If you wore a great killer ensemble for your grand entrance the first day of school, just make sure you back up your outfit and keep your dressing pattern consistent. That is, don’t wear an ultra trendy, right-off-the-runway look and then turn around and wear simple jeans & a tee combo the rest of the year.

Look good, but nothing too dressy or attention-grabbing (only exception is if that’s the look you’re going for the whole school year!).

Here are several teen fashion looks to consider:

Chic & understated: Black tee with dark denim hipsters, black boots, low-slung black belt, plus an oversized eye-catching necklace in turquoise, silver, or coral. Tres chic! Read the rest of this entry »

Retro runway — Many of today’s fierce teen fashions are inspired by the past

August 20, 2008 at 9:26 am (Fashion) ()

Alyssa Parish of Francesville describes her style as retro — inspired primarily by trends from the ’80s.

Tiffany Saunders models an outfit from the 1980s with clothes from Amused Vintage Clothing in West Lafayette.

“I am into skinny jeans and vests and I just got a new pair of boat shoes,” the 14-year-old said.

Alyssa and other students shopping for back-to-school clothes may be surprised by the clothes their parents wore at their age. Some of the trends from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are in stores and influencing today’s fashion for back-to-school.

“Today’s fashions are definitely being influenced from the past,” wrote Marla Shavin, Macy’s spokeswoman, in an e-mail. “The whole boho chic/hippie look is coming back (and) that is a throwback from the ’80s.”

Alyssa knows the power of vintage and even borrows some of the long necklaces, bangles and bracelets from her mom, who used to wear them back in the ’80s.

But what’s funny about the retro look is that no matter how hard teens may try to distance themselves from their parents, there is a fashion lesson to be learned by peering into closets from way back when.

When Alyssa’s mother, Stephanie Parish, was 14, she was wearing popped collars, skinny pants, high-waisted pants and military trend jackets with buttons.

Similar to today’s fashion, what you wore said something about you.

Some teens from past decades stayed in the center of the fashion spectrum, sporting the popular “prep” look, while others ventured out and did their own thing.

Parents and grandparents can easily reminisce about how fashion could speak volumes about a kid going back to school, even before they opened their mouths.

“When a guy wore a leather jacket, Elvis inspired bright-colored dress shirt or tight jeans, they were considered a hood,” said Alyssa’s grandmother, Diane Lumley, who was Alyssa’s age back in 1967.

Many of these styles are coming back into fashion — even the styles Lumley wore.

We have seen many celebrities walked in the red carpet proudly wearing their designs: shoes, handbags and sunglasses. Kylie Minogue wore Libby during the 2008 Brit Awards. Ashley Olsen was seen carrying a Carolina bag. Grey’s Anatomy’s Katherine Heigl brought a ‘Kase’ bag in the 2008 Academy awards. Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham favors Jimmy Choo’s shoe line as she was seen several times wearing them just like in the Vanity Fair Oscars Party when she wore the ‘Mae” sandals. These celebs are just a few who cannot resist the Jimmy Choo creations.

Summer fashion

August 11, 2008 at 10:59 am (Fashion) (, )

Well what with the queen of the 70’s wrap dress, Diane Von Furstenberg, making a comeback this summer and the shops being full of similar styles, now is the time, if you haven’t already, to buy a dress in order to get the most out of your purchase while there is still July and August to go.

The shops are positively bursting with floaty, flappy, happy styles, offering ample opportunity to add yet more colour to your wardrobe. We are of course stalwart two-piece devotees (well they are much easier to fit on bodies that are not evenly proportioned) but we’ve found a variety of interesting designs to illustrate the general principles of balancing your body symmetry. This is what we talk about in our free e-books if you haven’t already down loaded yours. So bear in mind that it is the style of dress we are talking about and look for those details when you go shopping.

Found this dress in the River Island home-shopping catalogue. It’s a great easy to wear style which can be worn not just over jeans long or short but also teamed with a contrasting colour vest too, allowing for bra straps to be hidden. This is also a great style for shorter bodies because the detail at the top of the garment draws the eye upwards and creates an illusion of height. Look for styles like this to give great versatility to your wardrobe because they can make light work of packing for holiday when you wear with flat sandals, T-shirts and jeans, on its own with flop flops and with heels and cropped trousers for an evening look.

Love this style of dress (very Diane VF) for curvy bodies. The wrap-around neckline and waist is one of the most flattering styles for fuller bosoms and the angel sleeves give great definition to shoulders, making arms look more shapely. The asymmetric wrap hem at the front of the dress breaks up the horizontal line across the legs and is just perfect for making full legs appear less heavy. In fact we can’t say enough about this marvellous dress from Great Universal catalogue,it’s a style you will want to wear again and again.

Tall bodies can take large prints, which create a foreshortening effect and this style of dress from Boden catalogue will work especially well for those of you who have long waists since the placement of the seam and fair outwards in the skirt will suggest longer legs and shorter waist. For example foreshortening if you want to draw attention away from your height, use a range of complimentary colours in accessories e.g. red cardi over shoulders, yellow bag and pink shoes – this will break up the vertical line. If you are a standard height and wanting to add an illusion of extra inches, then pick one colour from the dress like pink or cream and match the whole lot from shoes, bag and jacket/cardi in this one colour.

Just look at how this style of dress disguises a round tummy. It’s the diagonal lines that streamline the body and make legs look longer. You’ll know by now how much we like a chevron and this style of dress by M&S does all the work for you if you have a full waist or apple shape body. A dress like this has quite an elegant shape so trainers and jeans just won’t do it – best to wear with a small heel and cardi over the shoulders.

Back to a more casual look with this dropped-waist style from Freemans catalogue. Soft and floaty this look would work well for a slender body, adding extra volume and width. Tall slender shapes would also benefit as the noticeable horizontal line breaks up a tall shape and adds interest and width to the middle of the body.
This style of dress has been influenced by the twenties looks that came off the catwalk last September. Wear dresses like these over jeans and with flats for a more directional look or dress up with heels for a perfect summer evening style.
